AF210: Kongo Sword

18th century Kongo “sword of authority” with ivory finial. The design of this early African sword derives from 16th century Portuguese swords and their early contact within the Congo. The “sword of authority” could only be owned by a chief, and upon his death the sword would be stuck into the ground on his grave for an amount of time resulting in the rusted tip section always seen on authentic old examples that were used. The tip of this sword is rusted from being stuck into the ground, and the wood handle section is missing from under the metal bands on the handle. The ivory has a good honey patina, is well carved, and in good condition

Previously in an old Belgian collection.

33 overall with a 28 blade. 18th century, Kongo peoples, D.R. Congo, Africa.    ....$3500.00
