PH465: Philippine Dance Shield

Unusual Northern Philippine dance shield from the colonial period, most likely 1930s or earlier. This is a non-traditional (some elements of the Kalinga) shield made for, or by the missionaries to incorporate both old and new ways to the indigenous converts. The wood is very hard and heavy with well carved floral designs on the front, and what looks to be a missionary figure on the back handle. The handle is carved out o a separate piece of wood then the shield. The overall condition shows signs of age and use with some patina.

49” Long – 12” Wide – 11” Figure. Early 20th century, Luzon, The Philippines.    ....$1800
