OC425: Asmat Figure
Large wood Asmat figure for ceremonial ancestor worship. This is the hardwood type of figure that would have been hung inside the longhouse. The feet are pointed down, thus it can not stand on its own, but would have been hung from one of the house poles. The carving is well done, with incised body decoration and pierced septum. The overall patina is good and dark from age and use.
Previously in a California collection for the last 20 years.
