PH508: Kalinga Walking Staff

A rare figural Kalinga walking stick with bronze finial. The shaft is the same as a Kalinga spear and figural finials are rare. As natives were encouraged to not carry spears they still needed walking sticks for the hard mountainous terrain, and special walking sticks were used by headmen who helped and worked with the Westerners.

From the collection of Dr. Paul F. Russell who did malaria eradication work in the Philippines from 1929 to 1934.

53 1/4" Overall with a 4 1/2" Bronze finial. 19th or early 20th century, Luzon, The Philippines.    ....$875.00
