PH514: Philippine Ritual Box

A fine old Northern Philippine Ifugao ceremonial ritual box called a Punamhan. This well carved box with double animal heads has broad confident tool marks and a good crusty dark patina from many applications of libations during ceremonies. Most of these boxes have pigs heads on the ends, but this rare example has dogs heads. For very special occasions dogs were sacrificed instead of pigs. The eyes are inlayed pieces of shell or porcelain, and the top looks to have a snake for a handle.

19" Long by 10" Tall and 7 1/2" Wide. 19th century Ifugao people of Northern Luzon, Philippines.    ....$2500.00
