INDO541: Tanimbar Figure

Wooden ancestor or alter figure with overly large head in a simple cubistic style from the ”Southwest Islands” of Indonesia. Most likely from the island of Tanimbar, but possibly from Moa or Babar. Well carved with confident chisel marks showing and a masterfully simple face depicting the eyes and nose. The patina is good and dark from age and use. There is a very similar figure in the book "Beyond the Java Sea" that belongs to the Jakarta museum.

Previously in the collection of Anthony F. Granucci, author of the book “The Art of the Lesser Sundas”.

11 ¾” High by 3” Wide. 19th or early 20th century, Indonesia.    ....$4500.00
