AF569: Raffia Salampasu

Fine old Salampasu mask made entirely of woven natural fiber. A good strong example of a rare form of mask. The face is tightly woven fiber material with a raffia beard. The Salampasu were a fierce warring tribe with a graded warrior clan with different masks for different levels of initiation. The conical hat has natural pigment colors and signifies that this is a male figure represented. Mounted on a custom metal base.

29" tall (with beard) by 9" diameter. Early 20th century, D. R. Congo.    ....$2800.00
