OC498: Kepi Area / Digul Figure

Asmat figure with body decoration. This type of figure would have been hung inside the longhouse. The feet are pointed down, thus it can not stand on its own, but would have been hung from one of the interior longhouse poles. The carving is well done, with incised body decoration, and confident carving tool marks. The overall patina is good and dark from age and use. Mounted on a custom metal base.

Previously in the collection of Paul Harris, WA. Field collected by Todd Barlin in 1986 at West Papua ex Catholic Mission in Merauke.

18 1/2" Tall by 3" Wide. Early 20th century, New Guinea.    ....$2500.00
